Catch Us If You Can - Chapter 22

Chapter 22

Tyrone shakes Rory awake.

Tyrone : Come and see this.

Rory rubs his eyes and throws the covers from him. Granda is still sleeping beside him.

Tyrone : (pulls Rory’s hand) Come on!

Rory : What’s the panic? (follows him to the kitchen area)

Ruby is standing, holding a tea towel to her face. She glances at Rory once, then looks back at the television.
Rory looks at the television too. There is Rory, his photo filling the screen.

Newsreader : The missing pair were last seen at the caravan park, and it would appears that the travelers were in the area at that time, It seems now that they left at the same time as the last sighting of Mr. McIntosh and his grandson. We urge (menggesa) these people to get in touch. They are in no trouble. They just need to be eliminated from our enquiries (siasatan).

Ruby : [snorts (mendengus)] Eliminated from our enquiries! You’d think they were searching for a couple of serial killers.

Newsreader : I have to reiterate (ulang) that no one is in any trouble here. We are only concerned for the safety and well-being of Mr. McIntosh and his grandson.

Rory flops (rebahkan diri) on to a seat.

Tyrone : They’ll be looking for you now.

Ruby : They’ll find us.

Rory : Me and my granda’ll have to go.

Tyrone : No! (looks at Ruby) They don’t, do they? We could hide them if they do come looking. Just say we’ve never seen them.

Ruby : (smiles) No, son. It’s time for them to move on.

Tyrone : [tug (tarik) Rory’s sleeve] Hey loo, Rory, they’re talking to people in the street about you.

Interviewer : What do you think about the old man who was on the run with his grandson?

Woman 1 : If that old man had any sense he’d bring the laddie back home. He’s missing school, and goodness knows what terrible things could happen to him.

Rory : (laughs) She doesn’t know my granda, does she? He hasn’t got any sense at all.

Man 1 : I think it’s wonderful. They don’t want to be split up, so what choice did they have?

Man 2 : Leave them be. Let them live and die together. They’ve not done anything wrong.

Man 3 : We’ve got criminals, gun culture, drugs, and what are the police doing? Tracking down an old man and a young boy! Wasting police time.

Ruby : (smiles at Rory) You’re becoming something of a cause célèbre.

Rory : A cause. . . what?

Ruby : [grins (sengih)] People are taking sides about you, arguing about the rights and wrongs of your case. That’s good. The more people who know your plight (keadaan yang sukar) , the better chance you have of staying together.

Difference scene. Granda has wakes up an once his hearind aid had been found stuffed in the smelly socks,
Rory explains to him that they are going to leave.

Tyrone : Not today? (sound disappointed)

Granda : Aye.

Rory : We’ll going to up north. Remote and wild, no one would ever find us there.

Bernie : Too remote, Rory. Granda would never survive sleeping rough in this weather. We have a family in
Glasgow. You get there, by train. They’ll meet you at Queen Street Station. Give you shelter till you move on. Give you time to think.

Sammy : We’ll drive you to Dundee, and you can get a train from there.

Rory has a bit worry that people know their faces.

Granda : We could go in disguise (berlakon). I could be your granny (talks like female voice). And you could be my lovely granddaughter, Morag.

Rory : (looks at Granda) I’m not dressing up as a lassie for you.

Granda : I’m willing to dress up as a granny. Ruby will lend me one of her frocks (jubah), and a bit of lipstick and Bob’s your uncle.

Tyrone : Or, in this case, your granny. (laughs)

Rory : It’s OK for you, Granda. When you get old, men women look the same. Women grow moustaches. Look at Mr. Foley. But me? I could never pass for a girl.

Tyrone : I’m with you there, bro.

Zara : A frock would be an improvement. (standing at the door with Joshua in her hands)

Ruby : Just travel separately. Sit in different carriages, bury your head in a book. I bet no one will notice you.

Sammy : And head south after Glasgow. You’re only on the news up here, for the moment. No one will know who you are in England.

Ruby fills a flask with her homemade soup, and packs cheese and chicken sanddwishes into my rucksack. Ruby almost crying the whole time.

Tyrone : I wish you didn’t have to go. I was beginning to get used to you.

Rory : I wish we didn’t have to go either. Couldn’t your mum and dad adopt us?

Sammy, Ruby, Tyrone, Zara and Bernie drive they to Dundee. Rory is a bit hard to say goodbye. Rory cares about them as he feels that they are like his own family. At the station, Ruby hugs Granda so tight. Sammy handed Rory a slip of paper.

Sammy : That’s my mobile number. If you ever need anything - anything – you call me. You promise?

Ruby holds Rory for a long time.

Ruby : My cousin will be there to meet you. Let me know you’re OK, will you?

Rory feels so alone as watching them drive off. Granda suddenly disappears. He runs into the station and sees Granda stares at the timetable. He doesn’t have his glasses on and, anyway, he couldn’t have read a thing through his tears. Rory squeezes Granda’s hand.

Rory : You liked them, didn’t you, Granda?

Granda : I’ll never call them tinkers again, Rory.
