Chapter 21
Scene
like a party. They finish eating some sausages, mash and beans. Bernie brings
out a guitar.
Bernie
: Do you know this, Granda?
Bernie
starts to pluck out the tune of ‘Ten Guitars’.
Granda
: “Ten Guitars”! It’s brilliant!
Granda
begins to sing even he doesn’t know the words.
Rory
: He does that all time. (talks to Tyrone)
Granda
: I want ‘Do Not Forsake Me, Oh, My Darling”.
Rory
: It’ll be from some old film. Every song he knows is from some old film.
Rory
so surprises when Bernie knows the song and plucks it out. Sammy and Ruby know
it too they sang along with Granda. After that, one song follows another.
Bernie sang some rousing (bersemangat) Irish melody, and Sammy serenaded Ruby
with a love song.
Granda
: I think that’s beautiful. (there is tear in his eye)
Ruby
pulls Granda to her feet.
Ruby
: What about a dance now??
They
dance around a circle. Granda looks so happy. Granda exhausts when the dance
finished and he collapses into a chair beside Rory.
Granda
: I’ve not lost my touch.
Rory
: No, just your breath.
Granda
: I always was a good dancer.
Rory
: You were stepping all over Ruby’s toes.
Rory
looks at Ruby who is limping (terdengkot-dengkot) into a van.
Granda
: She’s a lovely lass (gadis), but she’s not a dancer. [leaned (membongkok)
closer and lower his voice]
Everybody
get the turns to sing. Rory and Tyrone
did a rap song together. There are lots of ‘ooos’ and
‘ahhhs’ when Zara sang
some daft girlie song.
Granda
: You’re the only one who hasn’t given us a song, Ruby.
Ruby
shakes (menggeleng) her head.
Ruby
: I don’t sing, Granda.
Bernie
: No, Ruby’s party piece is to tell fortunes (nasib), she’s got the gift.
Ruby
: Want me to see what the fortune holds for you, Granda?
Granda
: Who? Me? At my age? As long as my name doesn’t appear in the death notices in
the paper tomorrow I’ll be quite content, sweetheart.
Granda
looks at Rory.
Granda
: But the boy there, tell him in all the world. [smiles with cheeky grin (sengih
jahat)] He’s got a great
one. This boy’s special. Nobody like him in all the
world.
Rory
: OK. What have I got to do, cross your palm with silver?
Ruby
sit on a tool beside Rory and take Rory’s hand. She caresses (membelai) Rory’s
palm and folds her hand round his and closes her eyes. She begins to breathe so
deeply. Rory glances (mengerling) at Granda and he is watching fascinated
(tertarik).
Ruby
: (in low voice) I’m not telling you anything you don’t know already when I say
there are people after you. They’re closing in.
Rory
: Will they catch us? (eagerly)
Ruby
opens her eyes and her gaze (renungan) warms Rory.
Ruby
: No, They won’t catch you, Rory.
Rory
gives thumbs-up sign to Granda.
Ruby
: (still in low voice) They won’t find you. It’s you who will go to them. You
woun’t have any choice.
Rory:
(shakes head) Never.
Ruby
: (smiles) But not yet. You still have many adventures to come. Adventures,
that’s how I see your life. As an adventure.
Rory
: Me and my granda, we’ll always be together, won’t we?
Ruby
: You will meet people who will help you. And there will be people you can’t
trust. You’re looking for
something, Rory, and when you find it, everything
changes for you. (softer her voice) And a terrible sadness will come first.
Rory
: A terrible sadness.
Ruby
: (shakes her head) Because of that terrible sadness, Rory, you will find the
thing you’re looking for.
Ruby
pushes Rory’s hand (lepaskan tangan) and there are tears in her eyes.
Rory
: Is my granda going to be OK, Ruby?
Granda
: (interrupt) Of course, I’m going to be OK! I’m made a good stuff. By the way,
are we getting any tea at this party?
The
mood changes. More sausages and tea are brought out and dancing and singing go
on into the night. As Rory lays on the bed beside Granda, he keep thinking for
the answer for his question, ‘Is my granda going to be OK?’
